Just a few years ago, layaway programs were not in favor with most retailers.

BradsDeals lists 8 stores offering Layaway Programs this holiday season.
The payment program had fallen out of favor with the vast majority of shoppers, and only a few retailers thought layaway was worth the time and hassle to keep it alive.
However last year, layaway programs made a strong comeback among many retailers, especially Sears and K-mart, when they declared their National Layaway Week to help kick off the 2011 holiday shopping season. This year layaway programs are in high demand with stores, some programs even started early as September this year. Layaway competition is fierce this year, as major retailers like Toys R Us and Walmart have been heavily advertising their layaway programs leading up to the 2012 holiday season.
Earlier in September, Toys R Us announced that they would waive fees making its layaway service free for shoppers until October 31, but now the retailer has now decided to extend their layaway plan to December 16th due to seeing its popularity with customers. Walmart and K-mart both ante up their layaway programs as well. K-mart waived fees for shoppers and Walmart reduced their upfront fee from $15 to $5. Since the American economy is still putting a serious burden on American family incomes, retailers are hoping to make the holiday months easier, offering you several layaway options this year. Like last year, we’ve listed several stores and their layaway plans to aid you in purchasing your holiday items over time. Most of the stores are similar to last year, but some stores have changed their fees from last year due to the high popularity of layaway this year.

Each year we wake up earlier and earlier on Black Friday (or stay up later and later on Thanksgiving, depending on how you look at it) to get the best deals on our holiday gifts. This hot trend of being the first store to open, or even being open in the evening on Thanksgiving is causing retailers and law enforcement alike some serious public safety headaches. Earlier we discussed how this tradition of waking up before dawn on Black Friday has changed over the last few years, leading to more and more stories of people being injured in mobs, being threatened and sometimes even purposely harmed by other shoppers. Stores, law enforcement offices, and the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) all are starting to create new rules for Black Friday Crowd Management.
The most recent legislative effort to protect shoppers on Black Friday has been made by the town of Swansea, MA. Swansea officials are proposing a special bylaw that would require any retailer that is open on Black Friday between midnight and 4 A.M. to submit safety plans at least 60 days prior to Black Friday. Retailers would also need to pay for a police detail at least 15 days prior to Black Friday. In addition, a public safety review would be conducted by the police department that would include anticipated customer volume and traffic to determine the appropriate number of police officers on the scene. Swansea Police Chief George Arruda has asked the Board of Selectman to place this proposed bylaw on the schedule for the October 29th town meeting.
Where does this proposed bylaw get really interesting?

For a few weeks there have been some rogue 2012 Black Friday store hours lists circulating around the internet that are unverified. Today Black Friday by Brads Deals has verification that Walmart and Best Buy will be opening at midnight on Black Friday again this year.
Other Black Friday news sources have been reporting store opening hours over the last few weeks but have not been providing any hints of where their information is coming from.
We’ve noticed that it’s the exact same list that seems to be going around with store hours suspiciously similar to last year. We did some searching and couldn’t find any stores that had sent out press releases announcing opening times or any times listed on store websites. Today we saw our first hint at store hours from a reputable news source.

Last month Black Friday by Brad’s Deals gave you our predictions for what the top 10 hottest toys of 2012 will be. This week Walmart put out their list of the top 20 toys for this holiday season. So how did our predictions match up with Walmart’s?

What Black Friday by Brad’s Deals thinks the top 10 hottest toys for 2012 will be.
- Furby 2012: We both think that this revamped version of the cult favorite 90s toy will come out as the hottest toy for this holiday season. Currently priced at $54.00, we can’t wait to see if Walmart does a dramatic Black Friday discount on Furby 2012.
- LeapFrog LeapPad2: The LeapPad was a huge Black Friday seller in 2011 and Walmart is expecting it to be almost as popular this year. While we still think the LeapPad will be big this year, there are so many other tablets for kids (the iPad mini, Tabeo Kids Tablet, and the Nabi 2 Tablet for Kids,) that LeapFrog has some stiff competition this year.

Walmart won’t be selling the Kindle HD on Black Friday.
Will you be buying the new Amazon Kindle Fire HD this Black Friday? If so, it won’t be at Walmart! Although, this will be one of the hottest items of the holiday season this year, Walmart announced that they will no longer sell Amazon.com Kindle products, in their stores or online. Last Friday, Walmart PR put out the following written statement :
“Our customers trust us to provide a broad assortment of products at everyday low prices, and we approach every merchandising decision through this lens… This decision is consistent with our overall merchandising strategy.”

Can you believe it’s only one month until Black Friday?

It’s just 30 days until Black Friday – are you ready?
If you posted our Black Friday Countdown Widget on your blog, then you probably noticed that there are just thirty days left to get your Black Friday strategy together. For everyone else, though, it may come as a bit of a shock to think that the big day is already so close!
Your favorite retailers are already rolling out their holiday campaigns and announcing shopping perks, though. Here’s a round up of what we’ve seen come out just today!
MacMall Holiday Guide
One of the top online destinations for Apple products at discounted prices, MacMall has rolled out their 2011 Holiday Gift Guide. The guide is organized by Top Holiday Deals and Holiday Best-Sellers. Some of their top deals include:
- 27″ iMac Quad-Core Intel Core i7 2.93GHz, 4GB RAM, 1TB Hard Drive – $1,499.99
- Apple 13.3″ MacBook Air 2.13GHz, 4GB RAM, 256GB Flash Storage, NVIDIA GeForce 320M – $1,299.00
- Cisco Flip MinoHD Camcorder, 4GB, 1 Hour – $49.99
Target’s Wants You to Save the Date
Target is still pushing Halloween right now, and according to the one-holiday-at-a-time folks, that makes them actually seem rather sane. However, Target is no dummy, and has launched a “Save the Date” page that presumably will be the place to go for all of their Black Friday announcements. They’ve been experiencing a high number of site visitors today that has occasionally made the page unavailable, so we know people are really excited to see Target Black Friday ads. We’ll be keeping an eye on it for you, so stay tuned!
Walmart’s Holiday Price Matching
Annual Black Friday favorite Walmart announced a Christmas Price Guarantee. If you buy an eligible product between 11/1 and 12/25 and then later find it cheaper somewhere else, Walmart will give you a gift card for the difference. Note the emphasis on the word “eligible”, though – it’s pretty safe to assume that Black Friday items will be excluded. Still, when you include layaway and free shipping on nearly 95% of their products, Walmart is looking like a pretty sweet holiday shopping destination.
Best Buy Offers Free Shipping on Everything
Best Buy announced this morning that they will offer free shipping on everything at bestbuy.com. The free standard shipping offer is good from 11/1 to 12/27 with no minimum purchase required. We expect to be posting a lot of Best Buy deals that take advantage of the free shipping starting November 1st, so be sure to keep an eye on our Black Friday Deals!
Toys ‘R’ Us Will Give Shoppers 10% Back on Holiday Purchases
If you’re a loyalty rewards member at Toys R Us, your holiday toy shopping is looking pretty cool with 10% back in R Us dollars on holiday purchases. Members can earn a 2012 Super Savers Pass when they spend more than $200 during a specified time frame, which unlocks more than $100 in savings including exclusive monthly coupons. Layaway purchases do qualify for rewards points, though all layaway orders must be paid off by 12/4.

Walmart made the news earlier this month by announcing a special layaway option for it’s 2011 holiday shoppers. Then Sears and Kmart declared National Layaway Week to help kick off the holiday shopping season. All of this news about the return of layaway made a splash since the dismal state of the American economy is putting a serious strain on many families’ holiday shopping budgets. Layaway programs largely fell out of favor with retailers and shoppers alike in the last twenty years, with Walmart cancelling their own program in 2006. However, for the 2011 holiday shopping season, Walmart’s press release makes it clear that they want “to help families deliver a big Christmas this year” by reinstating the program. The discount chain also decided to slash prices on some toys beginning September 12th, the earliest they’ve ever done so in anticipation of the holiday season.

Pay for holiday gifts in installments with layaway programs at your favorite stores.
But Walmart isn’t the only major retailer out there offering layaway in 2011. Many of your favorite stores are hoping to make the holidays easier on your wallet this year with layaway programs of their own. It’s even possible to do layaway online. We’ve assembled a list of stores where you can pay for those big ticket items over time.
Please keep in mind that our opinion is that layaway is a bad consumer decision. You should just save the money yourself and make the same purchase, without a fee. You are literally loaning the retailer money and paying them a fee for the privilege!
Best Buy
Make a 25% down payment, plus a 5% nonrefundable layaway fee. Best Buy requires a minimum purchase of $250, but keep in mind that you can include several items to meet that total. Payments are made every two weeks until the balance is paid in full. Items that are ineligible for layaway include clearance, promotional, closeout and discontinued items. For complete details:
Best Buy Layaway Policy
Big Lots
Although it’s not well-publicized and information about it can be hard to find, Big Lots offers “price holds” on select items at select locations. Price holds usually are limited to upholstery, but it’s definitely worth asking about if there’s a particular piece of furniture that you want to buy. To qualify for a Price Hold, customers must put 10% down and pay off the balance within 90 days. Terms may vary by location, so be sure to ask how price holds work at your store locally. (more…)
