It’s Official: Black Friday Finally Comes to Oklahoma!

Black Friday has been illegal in Oklahoma for 72 years, but all of that is changing, thanks to a new state law that finally will allow Black Friday sales in the state of Oklahoma.

Welcome to Black Friday, Oklahoma! You finally get to line up in the cold with the rest of the country!

In a landslide vote on Wednesday, the Oklahoma House of Representatives voted 69-23 to abolish a law that required merchants to mark up merchandise by a minimum of 6%. The 1941 law, designed to keep local stores profitable, effectively shut Oklahoma retailers out of the Black Friday race, rendering them unable to offer the ultra low-priced Black Friday bargains otherwise available nationwide.

“Why should we penalize Oklahomans for wanting a good deal?” said Tom Newell, a Republican representative from Seminole. “The old law was outdated and put Oklahoma at a competitive disadvantage to other states that could lure shoppers with significant bargains. This bill is good for our economy, it’s great for retailers and it’s certainly good news for consumers.”
