Just a few years ago, layaway programs were not in favor with most retailers.

BradsDeals lists 8 stores offering Layaway Programs this holiday season.
The payment program had fallen out of favor with the vast majority of shoppers, and only a few retailers thought layaway was worth the time and hassle to keep it alive.
However last year, layaway programs made a strong comeback among many retailers, especially Sears and K-mart, when they declared their National Layaway Week to help kick off the 2011 holiday shopping season. This year layaway programs are in high demand with stores, some programs even started early as September this year. Layaway competition is fierce this year, as major retailers like Toys R Us and Walmart have been heavily advertising their layaway programs leading up to the 2012 holiday season.
Earlier in September, Toys R Us announced that they would waive fees making its layaway service free for shoppers until October 31, but now the retailer has now decided to extend their layaway plan to December 16th due to seeing its popularity with customers. Walmart and K-mart both ante up their layaway programs as well. K-mart waived fees for shoppers and Walmart reduced their upfront fee from $15 to $5. Since the American economy is still putting a serious burden on American family incomes, retailers are hoping to make the holiday months easier, offering you several layaway options this year. Like last year, we’ve listed several stores and their layaway plans to aid you in purchasing your holiday items over time. Most of the stores are similar to last year, but some stores have changed their fees from last year due to the high popularity of layaway this year.

We got our hands on the 2012 Toys R Us Big Toy Book this morning!
The toy book features 79 pages of the hottest toys of the 2012 holiday season and talks about convenient offerings such as the Toys R Us Price Match Guarantee, layaway, in store pick up for online purchases, and 10% cash back for Rewards “R” Us members. There are also details on the Great Big Toy Run Sweepstakes (a shopping spree at Toys R Us Times Square co-sponsored by Nickelodeon) and Toys for Tots. Oddly, no prices are given for the Furby toys or Wii U, though they are both featured in the toy book.
Here are a few of the toy catalog items that caught our eye: (more…)

Black Friday is slowly but surely approaching, and even though the biggest shopping day of the year is still seven weeks away, shoppers are already planning their Black Friday shopping strategies. However, you can’t possibly plan a shopping strategy until the Black Friday ads are released.
When will retailers release their Black Friday 2012 ads? That is the big question. The anticipation is building. So, we decided to make some of our own predictions of when big retailers might release, based on previous Black Friday ads releases from 2010 and 2011.
From research and observation of recent years, we suspect smaller retailers, like mall stores or hardware stores, may be the first to come out with their Black Friday ads. For bigger retailers like Toys R Us, Best Buy, Target and Walmart, we’ve made a list of dates of when their Black Friday ads came out within the last two years and what we predict will be this year’s release date. We’ll be posting them as soon as they arrive, whether earlier or later than predicted.
P.S. Sprint’s Black Friday ad is already live!

Parents, there’s no need to run out and frantically search for the hottest new toys for your kids this holiday season. Toys R Us has unveiled their “Hot Toy Reservation” program, which is a service that lets shoppers put toys on reserve for a guaranteed price. According to CEO, Jerry Storch, the program coincides with their annual hot toy list that came out September 19th. Here’s how the program works…
Shoppers have until October 31st to put items on reserve from the 50 hottest toy list, but there is a catch. You can only reserve toys if you are physically in the store, there’s no online option. Storch states that they decided not to offer the program online because:
“There’s a lot of complexity administering this kind of program,” said Storch. “This is the first time that we’re doing this. We wanted to make sure we do it right. We didn’t want anyone scamming the system, getting these toys and then selling them on eBay.”

We’re pretty excited that the major players have begun announcing their layaway plans! The holiday shopping season is just around the corner, and the big retailers know it. So far this year, the trend has been to extend the layaway period and to reduce or eliminate fees, making the service even more consumer-friendly by allowing for a longer payoff period.
If layaway is part of your Christmas shopping plans, you’ll want to pay attention to our layaway round up below. Here’s what we’ve seen announced so far.
Walmart Layaway
Starts: 9/16/12
Fee: $5
As previously mentioned, Walmart announced their layaway plans last week, launching the program a full month earlier than last year. Their original plan replaced the $10 cancellation fee with a $15 sign up fee, which would be refunded in the form of a $15 Walmart gift card upon payoff.
After the initial announcement, however, Walmart was flooded with complaints from consumers that the $15 layaway fee was too high. Walmart has since caved to consumer pressure and lowered the layaway fee to $5 – a definite win for holiday shoppers!
Toys R Us Layaway
Starts: 9/4/12
Fee: Free until 10/31, then $5
Toys R Us opened their holiday layaway program on Tuesday and will waive the service fee for new layaway accounts through October 31.
“We continue to look for ways to help our customers stretch their budgets, and by taking advantage of this free layaway option, they can make a series of small payments over time, as they begin to think about what might be on their children’s holiday wish lists,” said Troy Rice, Executive Vice President for stores and services.
There is no purchase minimum to participate in Toys R Us layaway, and customers must pick up their items by December 16.
Kmart Layway
Starts: 9/9/12
Fee: $5 on 8 week contracts; $10 on 12 week contracts / $15 down payment or 10% (whichever is greater)

You can use Kmart layaway in stores and online on purchases of $300 or more. With Kmart’s layaway program you can choose from a 8 or 12 week payment contract. You can cancel your purchase at any time, for a $10 fee, and will be refunded all payments collected for layaway items.
From September 27th thru November 29th, there will be a weekly drawing to have one layaway participants remaining balance paid off. By placing an item on layaway you have been entered into the sweepstakes, and you are eligible to have up to $500 of your purchase paid off by Kmart.

Here at Black Friday by BradsDeals, we see a lot of holiday shopping tidbits come through during the week that either aren’t quite Black Friday news or aren’t quite enough to make a whole story on their own.
Today we’re giving you the inside scoop on everything that hit our radar this week but that didn’t make it into posts of their own, including Kmart, Toys R Us, Radio Shack and Home Depot.
Three Holiday Toy Books Are Released
Kmart, Toys R Us and Target all have leaked or released their respective holiday toy guides and coupon books. This wasn’t exactly Black Friday news since the pricing on all three advertisements expires a full two days before Black Friday, but it’s clear that all three retailers are ramping up their holiday campaigns with these pre-Black Friday toy sales.

Can you believe it’s only one month until Black Friday?

It’s just 30 days until Black Friday – are you ready?
If you posted our Black Friday Countdown Widget on your blog, then you probably noticed that there are just thirty days left to get your Black Friday strategy together. For everyone else, though, it may come as a bit of a shock to think that the big day is already so close!
Your favorite retailers are already rolling out their holiday campaigns and announcing shopping perks, though. Here’s a round up of what we’ve seen come out just today!
MacMall Holiday Guide
One of the top online destinations for Apple products at discounted prices, MacMall has rolled out their 2011 Holiday Gift Guide. The guide is organized by Top Holiday Deals and Holiday Best-Sellers. Some of their top deals include:
- 27″ iMac Quad-Core Intel Core i7 2.93GHz, 4GB RAM, 1TB Hard Drive – $1,499.99
- Apple 13.3″ MacBook Air 2.13GHz, 4GB RAM, 256GB Flash Storage, NVIDIA GeForce 320M – $1,299.00
- Cisco Flip MinoHD Camcorder, 4GB, 1 Hour – $49.99
Target’s Wants You to Save the Date
Target is still pushing Halloween right now, and according to the one-holiday-at-a-time folks, that makes them actually seem rather sane. However, Target is no dummy, and has launched a “Save the Date” page that presumably will be the place to go for all of their Black Friday announcements. They’ve been experiencing a high number of site visitors today that has occasionally made the page unavailable, so we know people are really excited to see Target Black Friday ads. We’ll be keeping an eye on it for you, so stay tuned!
Walmart’s Holiday Price Matching
Annual Black Friday favorite Walmart announced a Christmas Price Guarantee. If you buy an eligible product between 11/1 and 12/25 and then later find it cheaper somewhere else, Walmart will give you a gift card for the difference. Note the emphasis on the word “eligible”, though – it’s pretty safe to assume that Black Friday items will be excluded. Still, when you include layaway and free shipping on nearly 95% of their products, Walmart is looking like a pretty sweet holiday shopping destination.
Best Buy Offers Free Shipping on Everything
Best Buy announced this morning that they will offer free shipping on everything at bestbuy.com. The free standard shipping offer is good from 11/1 to 12/27 with no minimum purchase required. We expect to be posting a lot of Best Buy deals that take advantage of the free shipping starting November 1st, so be sure to keep an eye on our Black Friday Deals!
Toys ‘R’ Us Will Give Shoppers 10% Back on Holiday Purchases
If you’re a loyalty rewards member at Toys R Us, your holiday toy shopping is looking pretty cool with 10% back in R Us dollars on holiday purchases. Members can earn a 2012 Super Savers Pass when they spend more than $200 during a specified time frame, which unlocks more than $100 in savings including exclusive monthly coupons. Layaway purchases do qualify for rewards points, though all layaway orders must be paid off by 12/4.
Don’t miss out on Black Friday ads from your favorite retailers!
