If you were planning on setting your alarm clocks for a half past “way too early” on Black Friday, don’t bother, because the trend of starting Black Friday the night before is steadily growing as we add OfficeMax to the list of stores jumping on the bandwagon.
According to a Wall Street Journal press release, OfficeMax announced today that most of their stores nationwide will start their in-store Black Friday event on Thanksgiving at 8 pm local time, and even earlier for their online event starting at 12:01 am Thanksgiving morning. There will be a total of 3 doorbuster events starting at 8 pm and 11 pm on Thanksgiving, then one at 5 am Black Friday morning, while supplies last.
Michael Lewis, OfficeMax executive vice president and president of retail, says that they are well aware that Black Friday is becoming a “celebrated and cherished tradition nationwide,” and he wants to supplement that by “opening [their] doors at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving to help make OfficeMax among the first stops in the holiday shopping tradition.”
For those who are looking to stay at home for this shopping extravaganza, OfficeMax has huge deals and savings starting way before their doors unlock. At Officemax.com, you will be able to take advantage of their online-only Black Friday savings event starting on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 9 pm EST, which leads up to three full days of their Black Friday ad deals starting at 12:01 am EST on Thanksgiving. Online shoppers will also get free shipping on any orders totaling $20 on Wednesday until Cyber Monday, Dec. 2.
This change in schedule is likely to spark some more stores to ride on OfficeMax’s coattails, namely Staples. As a direct competitor, OfficeMax is now a lot more likely to be the first to nab anyone looking for office supplies and tech because of their early start. Staples will have to do something–whether that be to start early as well or have some amazing deals up their sleeves–in order to compete.
