Black Friday isn’t strictly an American phenomenon these days, with post-Thanksgiving shopping extravaganzas catching on everywhere from Brazil to the United Kingdom. The latest country to be targeted by Black Friday sales is Canada, and the Sears Black Friday ad “Canadian Edition” is specially formulated just for our friends north of the border.
Many major retailers push Black Friday sales In Canada to match those in the United States in an effort to keep Canadian bargain hunters from crossing the border to join the fray. The catch, of course, is that our Canadian friends celebrate their Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October, more than a month ahead of the American holiday, so the tradition of going from turkey dinner to TV doorbusters just hasn’t materialized.
This year, Sears has stepped in to test the waters for a separate week-long “Black Friday” that follows on the heels of Canadian Thanksgiving. The “Canadian Edition” of Black Friday at Sears will run from October 11-17.
“Our customers already participate in our Black Friday sale in November so we wanted to give them one that, in a similar style to the U.S., would accompany our own Thanksgiving Holiday,” said Doug Campbell, Sears Canada CEO. “With the variety of sales being offered in stores and online they can pick up new home essentials or even get a head start on their Holiday shopping.”
So how does the Canadian Edition of the Sears Black Friday ad stack up? The ad is 8 pages long and features the usual array of major appliances, furniture, fitness equipment, tools and Christmas decor. The ad doesn’t seem to cover everything that Sears will be discounting, however, as savvy online shoppers checking out the Canadian Black Friday sale at Sears will also find toys, apparel, jewelry and more. (You can see for yourself here.)
Compared to last year’s 64-page American Sears Black Friday ad, this is a pretty weak offering. We’ve definitely seen better prices stateside on KitchenAid stand mixers, so we fully expect American Black Friday shoppers near the Canadian border to be sharing hot cocoa in line with our friends from the north on November 29th.
